MightyMeeting -- Making a Difference

Some of the established web conferencing vendors -- WebEx, Adobe, and others -- put up iPhone apps in the App Store.  I am sometimes asked about how MightyMeeting is different.

We are different, at many levels.

First, we have a different value proposition. Ours is "Present Anywhere". Doing online meetings is only one way to reach the audience.

With MightyMeeting, you have all of your presentations, and soon, all your demo videos, always with you on your smart phone or computing tablet. You can connect your device to a projector and show your presentation to the audience in the room. You can share your device with someone sitting next to you and make your pitch that way. You can also start an online meeting and tell your story to someone half way across the globe, directly from your device.

Note the key difference here ... We actually let you "start" an online meeting directly from your smart phone or tablet. Most, if not all, of the other folks let you join an online meeting but have difficulty running a meeting from a smart phone.

This brings us to the second big difference -- the solution architecture.

Most of the web conferencing solutions out there are media streaming server centric. Your screen is captured on one end, encoded as a video stream, and then broadcast to other meeting participants. If you move your mouse on the screen, that movement is also captured, encoded, and broadcast, regardless of how useless it might be.

Obviously, capturing the screen, encoding it, and broadcasting it can be done from a desktop. It is nearly impossible to do from a smart phone or tablet. Some may be able to do it, but the overall experience is not great.

Our patent pending solution, on the other hand, is content centric. We already have all your content in the cloud. We already distribute all your content via a content delivery network. We also let you share this content in real-time, using any device or browser that can access the cloud. The overall experience and performance are exceptional.

The architecture also enables you to do other cool tricks, like publish your presentations and demo videos (soon) on blogs, Twitter, and Facebook. Check out, for instance, this deck below. No flash, btw. View it in mobile Safari, if you wish.

Truly, Present Anywhere.

iPad App for Online Meetings

Check out this demo of our iPad app for online meetings as presented at DEMO today. Basically, you can invite folks from your address book to a web meeting and then share a presentation with them. You can choose a presentation from an online library of presentations. All of this from your tablet or smartphone, anytime and anyplace .

This is unique ... Enjoy ...

Now Running on iPad

Today we announced our support for iPad. We are demoing the app at 4:14 PST on Mar 22 at DEMO. Tune in at DEMO web site.

See the press release here.

Every iPhone app, as you know, runs on iPad. Ours is different. We designed this app to take advantage of the gorgeous iPad screen. We are also taking advantage of the faster CPU by offering support for video and higher resolution content.

iPad is a game changer. We know it is going to be a great media and entertainment device. With MightyMeeting, you can turn it into a powerful business tool that gives you access to all your slides and demo videos anytime and anyplace.

If you are a sales person or a business executive, there is really no reason for you to bring a laptop into the meeting room any more. You can walk in with an iPad, connect it to a projector, fire up MightyMeeting, and show your slides on the big screen. You can also share your iPad with someone sitting next to you and show your slides that way. Finally, you can start or join a web conference, and make your pitch to someone who is half way across the globe.

Good stuff!! You should definitely check it out. We will be submitting the app to the App Store some time in April and will be posting an update when it becomes available. Stay tuned.

Now Running at Amazon

Elastic scalability and performance

We have been running in the Amazon cloud for a week now ... with great results.

The simplicity and ease of use of the MightyMeeting apps is supported with a robust and scalable infrastructure that consists of different types of servers

  • an application server
  • a content transformation server
  • a meetings server
  • an email server
  • a database server
  • a digital asset repository

Previously, all this goodness was deployed on a few physical machines at a server hosting facility. Recently, we began running into physical limits. Backing up data and digital assets was beginning to take too long. Also, adding capacity meant adding new physical machines, which could not be easily done.

Moving to a cloud-based deployment was the only logical solution, and Amazon was an obvious choice.

Now we can take advantage of the limitless scalability of S3, the storage service. All files stored in S3 are automatically replicated at several locations making backups unnecessary. As an added benefit, the files can be distributed via CloudFround, Amazon's content delivery network.

Instead of deploying a dedicated database server, we are taking advantage of RDS, a relational database service provided by Amazon. We are taking database snapshots at regular intervals and storing them in S3.

Finally, our servers are now running as EC2 instances. We can add and remove instances on demand with a couple of mouse clicks.

The entire experience has been nothing but wonderful.
